Truck Protest in Canada
In early January 2022, truck drivers in Ottawa gathered to protest against the mandatory vaccination requirement for truckers traveling to the United States and re-entering Canada. Their actions inspired similar demonstrations in other Canadian cities as well as in Australia and New Zealand.
The protests resulted in the blocking of roads and bridges for days, prompting the mayor of Ottawa to declare a state of emergency on February 6. In an unprecedented move, Prime Minister Trudeau declared a national public order emergency on February 14 in an attempt to stop the protests.
While some bridges have since reopened, the Minister of Public Safety has advised people to avoid coming to Ottawa, and the protests continue.
