The recruiting process sucks

What was your job search experience like? Was it smooth for you, or was there a lot of stress? Different applicants definitely have different experiences, but we think the current recruiting process sucks and we need to redesign it.

So how is the recruiting process? From the employer’s standpoint of view, it is a process that involves everything from identifying, attracting, screening, shortlisting, interviewing, selecting, hiring, and onboarding employees. Usually, many companies outsource their recruiting needs, while some companies rely exclusively on advertisements, job boards, and social media channels to recruit talent for new positions. From the applicant’s perspective, it is a journey of searching for jobs, researching companies, writing and customizing resumes, filling out applications, doing several rounds of interviews, and waiting for the final results. The whole process takes a long time for both sides, and yet the results may not be pleasing at times.

We have collected some complaints from applicants below:

  • Resumes take lots of time and are tedious to fill out again and again, especially when companies have their own online systems;
  • The job description is long, riddled with jargon and buzzwords, and truck-loaded with unnecessary assessments;
  • The candidate’s time is not valued and respected;
  • Interviews are time-consuming and usually take two or three rounds;
  • There is no follow-up, feedback, or constructive suggestions after an interview, or worse, being ghosted.

It is undoubted that companies may find their desired talent by going through the whole process, but in most cases, the key to landing a job is through the network. In one experiment, a man sent out 1000 resumes but only got 20 replies, but once he started building his network and asking around, he got more than 100 job offers. We can clearly see which method is more efficient. So if the network is the key, then why do employees and employers spend so much energy, time, and money on the less efficient process?

We could imagine it would be a totally different recruiting process if we focused on the goal of networking, such as building a self attribute, establishing a connection with the person you are interested in or who is in the field you want to work with, working on the connection until you are well known to others, and following up to build an authentic connection that will ultimately help you land a job.
